· Reading logs are due on Wednesday, September 28. Students must read two or more books each month, log the book, and obtain a parent signature for each book read.

· Every two weeks students will receive a new list of Vocabra-Words; these will be their spelling and vocabulary words. The students will be tested on these words at the end of the two weeks. They will take a fill in the blank vocabulary test and a spelling test. The first tests will be on Friday, Sept 9.

· Mark your calendars! Picture Day is Monday, September 12 (information will be sent home soon) and Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 14, at 6:30 P.M.

· Remember our teaming will be “going green.” We will discontinue giving students a paper syllabus in a few weeks. Students will be responsible for printing their own syllabus at home or at the media center. Please contact us if you do not have access to a computer and you need us to give you a syllabus.

· A weekly syllabus will be provided every Monday throughout the school year to all students on team. The syllabi will be sent home on paper for the first few weeks and then it will be provided in class on Mondays for students to write down homework in their planners and provided on my blog for reference later in the week.

· All students will need a green folder and two quad-grid composition books for the year. One composition book should be with the student every day there is science class unless told otherwise by a team teacher.

Guidelines for Scientific Drawings
An acceptable scientific drawing includes the following 10 elements:
1. The drawing is made with a sharp, No. 2 pencil.
2. The size of the drawing is proportional to the way it appears in the field of view.
3. The magnification and/or the diameter of the field of view is printed just below the circle.
4. The title appears in upper-case letters just below the magnification.
5. The lines used for labeling end at, or just inside of, the feature being identified.
6. A ruler is used to draw the lines for labels.
7. Labels are printed neatly outside the field of view and parallel to the bottom of the page.
8. The magnification, title, and labels are printed, not written in cursive.
9. There are no noticeable erasure marks.
10. Measurements are printed within parentheses to the right of the title.

I will be collecting notebooks on Wednesday 5/11 make sure you have all of your bean/corn drawings (8 drawings of each colored, labeled, measured, and described) I will also be checking in heading, focus, apply, and explore [Drawings] sections for 7.1-7.4 (spyrogyra, Elodea, onion leaf, Human cells.)

A 20 point Extra Credit Assignment was introduced today during Health class. The project completed in its entirety is due on May 23rd no exceptions. This project is to be completed by students on their own.

Student may work with a partner, but they will have to create a digital narrative for the project and may not do a paper brochure.

This project includes a 5 min presentation requirement.

Please refer to the Health syllabus for other homework assignments this week.

Design Problem

In this section write a couple of sentences describing what you are trying to do with your prototype, what problem are you attempting to solve.

Criteria for Measuring Success

In this section write a few sentences about how you are determining success of this prototype. For example we outlined how we are going to compare one tower to the next, which can also be how we measure success.

Prototype Design

Here you want to reference your drawing (see drawing: Title) and give a quick description of your procedure used to build your tower. What concepts did you use when building your tower and why you chose them. (Example: I chose to use cross bracing and triangles to build my tower because…) This does not need to be exhaustive, just share a couple of ideas.

Prototype Procedure (I built a prototype)

In this section you will write about the steps you took and how it all came together. (I began by mixing sand and glue for the base…) This should include all major steps in building the tower a little on why you chose to take those steps.

Prototype testing

During your teams multiple tests what did you observe. What was working and what was not working. Did you choose to reinforce things and why you chose to make those changes.

Analyzing Data and Evaluating the Results

Report your data here according to our "Structurability" formula. How did your tower fare during the earthquake. Give you time survived for both trials etc.

Identifying Improvements or New Design Based on Results:

Basically this is if you were to do this again how would you approach this problem based on knowledge gained from the earthquake tower technological design lab.

Student Information Sheet

Igneous Rocks

Basalt is an extrusive igneous rock, so it is rather fine-grained. Basalt is usually dark gray or black,
with a fairly smooth surface. There are no visible layers.
Granite is an intrusive igneous rock. It is coarse-grained with large crystals. Granite can be white to
light gray, with black specks. Granite is often pinkish in hue. The crystals are not arranged in layers.
Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock that looks like black glass. It is very smooth, often with semicircular
rings in places where it is fractured. The color may be grayish or greenish at times.
Pumice is an extrusive igneous rock, so it is rather fine-grained with no crystals. It is not a smooth
rock, however, as gas bubbles trapped within the rock during cooling give it many air pockets. Pumice
is very light and is usually gray in color (but can be white or pink).

Sedimentary Rocks

Sandstone is a very common sedimentary rock. It is composed of layers that are brown, pinkish, white,
or reddish in color. Sometimes sandstone is not well compacted, and often sand grains can be scraped
from the rock.
Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock made from clay. It can be many different colors, but is usually
black, gray, or brown.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is formed chemically from the mixing of calcite and sediment.
It can have many different grain sizes, and is usually white or light colored. It often contains fossils.
Because it contains calcium carbonate, limestone fizzes when vinegar is dropped on it. Acids like
vinegar will dissolve it over time.

Metamorphic Rocks

Gneiss is a coarse-grained metamorphic rock. It has layers that look like bands running through it.
Gneiss is formed when great pressure is applied to granite or schist.
Marble can vary in grain size. Crystals can usually be seen in marble. The color is usually light, often
white, and often has streaks of other colors within it. Marble is formed when limestone is subjected
to pressure. Like limestone, marble often fizzes when vinegar is applied.
Slate is a fine-grained, dark colored metamorphic rock, formed when shale is put under pressure. Slate
is layered and easily splits into flat pieces.
