Important Information:
• Don’t forget to turn in both the permission slip and a check, for our sixth grade end of the year field trip. It is due by Friday, April 18. No Exceptions! If you need a scholarship please see me as soon as possible, but definitely before the due date.
• Students should be making good progress gathering information for their research project. For the next two weeks students will have limited time in the media center to use the computers and reference books to gather research material. Students should plan to research on their own at the public library or here at school. Our library is open before school everyday except Wednesdays. It is open everyday after school from 3:30 - 4:30, as well.
• Minimum of Three Source Cards are due April 16 and Fifteen Note Cards are due April 17.
• Be sure to bring your research folder and materials to class every day. You never know when you can earn extra credit points.
• Our next reading log is due on Friday, April 17.
• Remember our team does not accept late work during the 3rd trimester.
• The sixth grade honor roll breakfast is on Friday, April 17 @ 8:00am! Congratulations!!!

Science Terms You Should Know!

Science Vocabulary

Mass – The amount of matter in an object

Volume - The amount of 3–dimensional space taken up by an object. (Capacity)

Distance – The space between two objects or points.

Liter – The basic metric unit of volume. (l)

Meter – The basic metric unit of distance. (m)

Gram – The basic metric unit of mass. (g)

Data – A collection of facts from which conclusions may be made.

Dependent Variable – The variable that is observed and measured, the data. (y-axis)

Independent Variable – The variable that can cause a change in the dependent variable. (x-axis)

Hypothesis – A reasonable prediction, an educated guess.

Null hypothesis – A statement that is opposite of your predicted hypothesis.

Inquiry – The act of gathering or asking for information.

Inferences – A reasonable explanation for an event or observation.

Scientific Theory – Inferred explanation for why something happens. (Theory of Evolution)

Scientific Law – Statements or descriptions of how something happens. (The law of gravity)

Beaker – Laboratory glassware shaped as a cylinder with a notch for pouring liquids.

Metric or SI – The International System of Units.

Kilo – The SI prefix for 1000 (k)

Deci – The SI prefix for 0.1 (d)

Centi – The SI prefix for 0.01 (c)

Milli – The SI prefix for 0.001 (m)

States of Matter

Matter exists in three states:
Solid (Example: Ice)
Liquid (Example: Water)
Gas (Example: Water Vapor)

Endothermic:
A process or reaction that absorbs heat. For example, ice melting is an example of an endothermic process because it absorbs heat from its surroundings.

Exothermic:
A process or reaction that releases heat. For example, wood burning in the presence of oxygen is an example of an exothermic reaction.

Convection:
The process in which cool air delves down, while warmer air rises to the top. The warm air usually cools in the cooler, higher sections of the atmosphere and again begins to return back down. Local breezes, wind and even thunderstorms are a result of convection. Also, the transfer of heat in a gas or liquid by the movement of particles within the fluid.

Conduction:
Energy transfer from one material to another by direct contact.

Radiation:
energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form of rays or waves or particles

Biome Brochure Project

Biome Project

TASK: Create a travel brochure that promotes visiting one of the Earth’s biomes. Your biome will be based on an organism card you will receive. Your group will decide which biome best fits the organisms you are randomly assigned to. You must use accurate information about the biome and its conditions, but you may use humor and creativity to offer suggestions for overcoming the challenges of visiting the location.

Have you ever read a brochure? Brochures are used to communicate information about specific topics in a brief, reader friendly format. The use of color, diagrams, and a pleasing layout of the information is used to catch and hold the reader’s attention. Your brochure may be completely computer generated or done by hand. (Final products should not be completed in pencil.)

4 points Design a brochure that is attractive, capturing and inviting. The cover should lure vacationers to your area.

2 points Describe the biotic and abiotic factors in your biome.

2 points Explain the location of biome, include a map highlighting the areas of the world that show where your biome is.

2 points Explain the climate of your biome. Discuss average annual precipitation. Discuss average annual temperature.

4 points Describe the animal adaptations for survival within the biome. Include at least 2 pictures of animals.

4 points Explain the plants/fungal adaptations for survival in your biome. Include at least 2 pictures of the plants.

3 points Create a food chain or a food web for common animals within the biome. Include the animals on your organism cards in your selection.

4 points Explain at least 4 interesting facts about your region.

5 points Properly use and identify at least 10 of the following vocabulary terms: population, ecosystem, niche, producers, consumers, carnivore, omnivore, scavenger, decomposer, predator, prey, limiting factor, carrying capacity, symbiosis, mutualism, commensalisms, parasitism, coevolution

Remember to work efficiently during the provided class time and bring in any materials you find at home to class so you can compile information with your group. You have 3 days in class to work on this project and they must be fully completed to turn in on: Monday, May 17th.
